Question 1

What is OpenTex?

Accepted Answer

OpenTex is a high-performance, local-first LaTeX editor and research workspace that compiles documents directly in your browser in ~120ms using WebAssembly with zero local TeX Live installation.

Question 2

Does OpenTex keep my research documents and manuscripts private?

Accepted Answer

Yes. OpenTex operates on a strict local-first architecture. All documents, figures, styles, and BibTeX bibliographies are stored in your browser's IndexedDB. Compilation executes locally via WebAssembly, so your files never leave your machine during routine drafting and editing.

Question 3

How does OpenTex compare to Overleaf?

Accepted Answer

Unlike cloud-only platforms such as Overleaf, OpenTex eliminates server compile queues, compile timeouts, and cloud dependencies. It delivers sub-second (~120ms) WebAssembly builds, offline capability, complete data privacy, and 1-click drag-and-drop Overleaf ZIP archive import.

Question 4

What document formats and academic publisher templates are supported?

Accepted Answer

OpenTex includes verified, camera-ready preambles for IEEE, ACM, Nature, arXiv preprints, Springer LNCS, NeurIPS, ICML, CVPR, university master's and doctoral theses, academic resumes, Beamer presentation slides, scientific posters, and technical reports.

Question 5

How do I import existing projects from Overleaf into OpenTex?

Accepted Answer

Download your project from Overleaf as a .zip file and drag it directly onto the OpenTex landing page or workspace. OpenTex unpacks all LaTeX files, bibliography databases, and image assets into browser-local storage in seconds.

Question 6

Do I need to install TeX Live, MacTeX, or MikTeX?

Accepted Answer

No. OpenTex runs an integrated XeTeX/BusyTeX WebAssembly engine directly inside the browser, completely removing the need to install or configure a multi-gigabyte local TeX distribution.
